Students have been drawing everyday this week. Portraits has been the assignment. There is a list below of things we have been doing in class and students will be responsible for submitting these in their first portfolio submission soon. I would like to add that even though we have been drawing each day, drawings that have been complete outside of class that suit each task are also appropriate to hand in. Students are always encouraged to work on their own to expand their skills.
Pencil portrait
charcoal portrait
coloured chalk portrait
white on black portrait
leaves/tree drawing

It was a great week to begin warming up and practicing drawing skills. For some, it's been a year since they've had art class. Results have been quite impressive! We went to the cemetery near by to do studies of leaves and trees. Then on days the weather didn't cooperate, we stayed inside and began refreshing and working on portrait skills. Reminder that students should keep working on their own to produce quality pieces that will be submitted at the end of the month.
Drawings each are responsible so far:
1 - leaves/trees composition
1- shaded pencil portrait
Sketchbook Assignment #2 - Shoes
Fill a page of studies of a variety of shoes in different poses. On the second page, complete a quality line drawing of an arrangement of at least 3 shoes.
** due date - Wed. Sept 20
This sketchbook assignment came with the introduction of all the sketchbook assignments due for the remainder of the semester. Students are encouraged to look ahead and work on assignments before assigned and/or due to produce the best work possible. Please contact me if you wish to have a copy of the list.

What a great, intimate class! We should be able to accomplish a lot of great things this year! We began this week with drawing warm up exercises and drawing objects with careful observation and a variety of tones. Also students began with their first version of an artist statement which is a written way for each to describe they work as an artist. This will be updated periodically through out the semester.
Next week students are asked to come to class prepared to draw outdoors!
Sketchbook Assignment #1 - Sketchbook Title Page
Students are required to decorate the first page of the sketchbook. They should aim to plan and execute this with great detail and aim to show me a little about themselves while creating a dazzling, decorated page. Students may use their choice of materials and methods to complete this assignment.
Due date: Wed., Sept. 14
