Art 401

Some great pieces have been turned in lately.  I hope to have some images posted soon.  Students have just completed some drawing experimentation with a number of different drawing materials.  For their final piece students completed a drawing using a medium of their choice.  This drawing was due to pass in Thurs., Nov. 3.

There are a number of assignments "on the go".  I encourage students to keep track of them and work a little at a time.
List of required assignments:
1.  Famous Art copy & questions - Nov. 8
2.  Art Career Poster (term research proj.) - Nov. 21
3.  Test 2 - TBA
4.  Prinicles Pages -early Dec.
These are all assignments completed outside of class, so things completed in class will be added to the list over the next couple weeks.

Quite a few assignments have been completed, submitted and marked.  Check SAS for updated marks!  Every student is responsible for the assignments listed below to date:
Cave Art questions
Elements Squares Colouring Assignment
Trompe L'oeil flat object drawing
Test review homework check
Test 1
Sketches
Title page
hand hold an object
object from home shaded with lines or dots only.

Please contact me anytime to see information or clarification on any of these assignments.

Currently we are working on learning more drawing techniques but this time with a variety of drawing materials.  The lesson is set up so the students have 4 days to experiment with ink, chalk, charcoal, and pastel.  On the 5th day, students will choose their favourite medium and subject matter to complete a large drawing to be submitted.

Last week, students were introduced to the Term 1 research project - the Art Career Help Wanted poster.  Students have already been given the opportunity to choose and research an art career.  The should now begin designing and executing their final poster on their own to be submitted for midterms in November.  I encourage students to begin this final poster anytime and not to leave it for the last minute.  It accounts for part of their 30% Test/Term project mark.

Students have been working hard and applying new shading techniques to their drawings this week.  A good drawing will always include highlights, midtones, and shadows.  We've gone through a number of new drawings tasks and instructions for learning how to draw better and drawing "what you see".

Students were introduced this week to the list of sketches that will be required over the course of the semester.  There are 6 required assignments that will be assigned individual due dates and a list of 9 of which 5 must be completed by the end of the semester.  With having the list of assignments now, students are encouraged to look ahead and try some on their own before they are due to be submitted.  My hope is that students will work at submitting their best work possible after working on it before the due date.

Sketchbook Assignment #2 - Hand holding an object
Students must complete a page of hand/foot studies (3-4/page).  On a second page, complete a longer lifesize detailed drawing of their hand holding an object.  No shading needed.
due date:  Tues. Sept. 27
Elements Squares colouring assignment is also due Tues., Sept. 27

A great start to art assignments this week.  We began the always popular "doodle" assignment you save on the opening page.  This assignment will continue into next week and is not homework at this point.  The second assignment, which is nearly complete, is "Elements Colouring Assignment".  Students were instructed to colour in an image given to them based on a set of instructions that emphasize the Elements of Art.  Most are over half complete so I anticipate this asssignment to be submitted next week.  Check back for official due dates on both these assignments.

Sketchbook Assignment - none this weekend as the first one planned goes along with specific drawing instruction that I will introduce early next week.  Stay tuned.

I think the students had a wonderful, exciting week beginning to learn about the world of art.  I think it is highly anticipated that they are going to learn how to draw better.  We began today with an introduction to the Defnition of Art and Genres of Art.  Monday will bring an introduction to the Elements of Art.  We will also begin drawing activities and drawing instruction next week.

Sketchbook Assignment #1 - Sketchbook Title Page
Students are required to decorate the first page of the sketchbook.  They should aim to plan and execute this with great detail and aim to show me a little about themselves while creating a dazzling, decorated page.  Students may use their choice of materials and methods to complete this assignment.
Due date - Wed. Sept. 14
